Selecting the Right Paint Color for Your Home

Selecting the Right Paint Color for Your Home

Painting can be a great and easy way to give any room in your home a new look! At Andy Crown Construction we often run into questions from our customers asking us what the best paint color for their walls would be. In this article we will discuss the steps you should consider when picking a new paint color for your home.

Which paint should you choose?

Since paint comes in various types of colors, textures, sheens, and oils, you can see why the decision might be a hard one to make.  The most preferred and common paint type is latex since it has long-lasting durability and is easy to clean up. Latex paint tends to be more fade resistant and breathes better than oil (resulting in less bubbles and blistering of paint) hence making latex paint the perfect type of paint to use on our homes walls.  Oil paint is great for priming real wood trim and moldings keep in mind oil paint takes longer to dry than latex.

Choosing the right type of sheen:

Glossy Paint: The glossier the paint it, the easier it will be to clean up. If you have small children or own a childcare business, you may want to opt in for a high sheen paint. Areas such as playrooms tend to end up with drawings on the walls, foods, and grease stains; with a glossy paint you will be able to clean these messes without any hassles.

Semi-Glossy: Semi-gloss paint is also easier to wash off any imperfections from your walls. Semi-gloss is less shiny compared to glossy paint and is typically cheaper. Some people tend to use semi-gloss on their kitchens, washrooms and trim. Semi-Glossy paint is a great choice if you want little gloss and a paint that’s easy to clean.

Matte Paint: If you have walls with lots of imperfections choosing a matte or flat paint might be in your best interest. Typically, with this paint selection you can get away with only one coat of paint. The only downfall to this paint is that it is not easy to clean and will show more dirt than other walls.  One of the most popular sheens is called eggshell it is basically the same as matte and flat paint as it hides wall imperfections. The only difference is its easier to wash, smoother, and durable which makes it the perfect sheen for both glossy and matte worlds.

Colors – What one to choose!

Choosing paint colors is one of the most difficult decisions when selecting paint. Paint colors can either make your room look completely brand new or create a bad look you weren’t looking for. For those who are selling their homes its best to select the color white, off white, or neutrals for your walls. Giving you’re home a brighter and cleaner appearance.  For those of us who are not selling our home or maybe are but want to take advantage the one hundred and thousands of paint color selections to choose from – We got you covered!

Turning to the color wheel to make any paint decisions is great rule of thumb. Remember paint colors can change the appearance of any room and with a little planning you can achieve the feel or look you are looking for.  Primary colors (red, blue, and yellow) when combined will give you secondary colors (green, orange, purple).  Colors like purple and blue that are analogous to each other will allow one color to stand out more. Complementary colors meaning colors that are opposite to each other on the color wheel such as red and green will give a color pop! If you are looking for a more soothing subtle look you should stick to one color shade for example the same shade of blue.  If you have a small room and want it to appear larger the colors blue, purple, and greens will do the trick. Cool colors like orange, red, and yellow will give you a more vibrant appearance.
