Extension Cord Safety
Mostly every family has an extension cord if not multiples around their house. Did you know that extension cords are among the most dangerous electrical appliances in your home? If not used properly or cared for an extension cord could be the cause of electrocutions, house fires, and fatal injuries.
Not all extension cords are the same and it is important to select the appropriate extension cord for your needs/use. Below we have listed three questions to help you determine which extension cord is appropriate for you and the task at hand.
IS IT EQUIPPED FOR INDOOR OR OUTDOOR USE?
To safely use an extension cord outside you should make sure that it is equipped for the different types of weather seasons. An outdoor extension cord will have a tougher insulation/jacket which allows it to withstand moisture, UV rays, and temperature changes. Typically, if an extension cord is safe for outside use it will say so clearly on its packaging. If you are unsure contact the manufacturer for more information.
CAN IT WITHSTAND THE WATTAGE OF YOUR DEVICE?
The gage and length of your extension cord determines the wattage rating of the cord. You can find the wattage of your cord on a tag attached to the cord, if you are not sure, contact the manufacturer to clarify. Exceeding the cords wattage rate can cause overheating and the possibility of a fire.
ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A TEMPORARY OR LONG-TERM SOLUTION?
Extension cords are only intended for temporary use. Leaving an extension cord plugged in will cause electricity to continue to circulate through the device potentially causing overheating, defects, and fires. If you are looking for a more permanent fix you should look into installing more electrical outlets around your home.
