What is a deck?

A Deck is an open outdoor porch or platform without a roof that extends from the house typically made from wood or vinyl. Some decks have a railing and offer the homeowner beautiful views of their surroundings.

What is a patio?

A Patio is an outdoor space placed directly on the ground. Its either connected to the house or constructed in a separate part of the yard. Typically, patios have concrete bases. But can be made with tile, brick, stone, or other materials to create the foundation. Patios don’t have a railing and usually offer the homeowner built in barbecues, sitting areas, and fire pits.

Now that you know the difference between a patio and deck, use the charts below to help you decide which one is right for you.

Pros and Cons of decks:

Pros:

  • Can be installed on any type of terrain, even if yard is not leveled.
  • Offers a great view since its build off the ground.
  • Decks can be painted or stained to any color you want making it easy change your decks appearance.
  • Can increase homes value.
  • Retains less heat making it more comfortable to enjoy during the hot summer months.

Cons:

  • Decks need to be stained, power washed, and sealed every couple of years which adds extra maintenance.
  • Discoloration may happen if not well maintained.
  • Depending on your home, city, state, and province you live in you may need to get a permit to build your deck. Adding to more costs and waiting time.
  • Decks can have a shorter lifespan as wood is more susceptible to weather and can rot over time.

Pros and Cons of Patios:

Pros:

  • Patios don’t require maintenance.
  • Lower to the ground providing more flexibility in design and landscaping for privacy.
  • Patios have a long lifespan without much upkeep.
  • Patios rarely require a permit to install.

Cons:

  • Patios are at greater risk for cracks if the soil under the concrete was not properly prepared.
  • Patios can’t be installed on any terrain. They are best suited for even ground.
  • In the winter season ice can form on the surface causing dangerous slips/falls.
  • Patios are susceptible to stains and are difficult to clean once a patios surface is stained.
  • Patios take longer to install and may require more labor.

Still can’t decide.
